Athabasca Falls

from Stories from the Landscape by Joseph Tennant

/

lyrics

thin mists grace the banks of athabasca
they swirl and skirt between the driving snowfall
ice sheets shift above the coursing river
part ways beneath the boulder's grating pressure
agitated by the snow
the cold is gnawing on my bones

mom prays earnestly to travel safely
while dad fights the winter with a coffee
asphalt hidden by a glassy glacier
our car shudders like a nervous dancer
captivated by the falls
watch the road you'll kill us all

spruce trees dance beside the freezing water
ghastly beneath a blanket of macabre
it's strange to be so tense amid creation
eyes wide in wonder and in trepidation
trembling upon the wheel
four thousand pounds of screeching steel
gripping panic, I react
at least our limbs are still intact
